My words are very easy to understand; very easy to put into practice. Yet no one in the world has the ability to understand; no one has the ability to put them into practice. Well, words have been handed down from antiquity; affairs have been controlled by others. That's merely stupidity. That's not my understanding. One who understands is a rarity, so I hold them dear to my heart. That's why a wise person covers himself with coarse clothing while carrying a precious gem within. ![]() Commentary: 70 ~ Simplicity -My words are very easy to understand; very easy to put into practice. -Yet no one in the world has the ability to understand; no one has the ability to put them into practice. We try to make life so complicated, don't we? It seems like we're always looking for some problem to solve. Maybe that's because we've been told all our lives that we're only valuable human beings if we can solve a problem? So, we create problems that aren't even there? Laozi suggests how simple life can really be if we don't go around looking for ways to complicate it. -Well, words have been handed down from antiquity; affairs have been controlled by others. -That's merely stupidity. -That's not my understanding. Do you look to parents, teachers and Masters to tell you what you should do in order to have a happier and more fulfilling life? All those people have done is listen to those who preached to them, and then pass on the rules that were told to them. Do you think they have any greater understanding of what life's about than you do? -One who understands is a rarity, so I hold them dear to my heart. -That's why a wise person covers himself with coarse clothing while carrying a precious gem within. What a treasure it is to find others who appreciate the simplicity of life - rare as they might be. Most often we come across people who think they have all the answers and try to make us conform to their way of thinking and acting. It's no wonder we might not let everyone we meet into the innermost depths of our hearts. We might appear coarse to some - as though they can't find a soft spot where they can enter and work their manipulations. But the gem of our own spirit is always shining brightly for those who appreciate the freedom of the dance. | BY: Nina | Guodian Laozi | DDJ Concordance | Comparisons | From the DIO Forum | BY: Bao Pu | By: Joshua | | Return Home | Laozi's Dao De Jing | Your Dao De Jing | Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) | Links | Meditation | Dao (Tao) is Open Forum | Book List | Other Stuff | |
