One who has a good strategy doesn't get forceful. One who is good at applying pressure doesn't get angry. One who is good at winning doesn't get enmeshed. One who is good at employing others stays beneath them. That's called: Not disputing with their De. That's called: Employing people. That's called: Adapting to the heavens. From the start to the climax. ![]() Commentary: 68 ~ When battles are necessary There are a few chapters in the Dao De Jing that deal specifically with battles. These chapters have always befuddled me, since I don't have an interest in going into battle, nor am I interested in strategizing ways to win battles. So, I'll try to deal with these chapters in a personal way - citing instances when each of us might be pressed into situations which could cause the necessity of doing battle on a small scale. As an example for Chapter 68, I'll use the idea of asking your boss for a raise. -One who has a good strategy doesn't get forceful. -One who is good at applying pressure doesn't get angry. -One who is good at winning doesn't get enmeshed. -One who is good at employing others stays beneath them. It's a good idea to spend some time strategizing by thinking over why it is that you feel you deserve a raise. If you simply approach your boss in a forceful way, demanding a raise, you'd probably get booted out of there in an instant. If you have a plan in mind, you wouldn't need to act overpowering. You might need to apply some pressure if your boss doesn't see things the same way you do, but it's best not to get angry at him. Remembering that your goal is to get paid fair wages for your work, don't get involved with office politics or with the economical status of the company. Telling your boss he's making way too much money isn't going to get you anywhere. Express appreciation for the great job your boss is doing, and tell him how you'll become even more helpful to him in a managerial position - always allow your boss to feel like you'd never be a threat to his position. -That's called: Not disputing with their De. -That's called: Employing people. -That's called: Adapting to the heavens. By not disputing with their De, you wouldn't tell your boss how differently (or better) you'd do things - that allows the boss the flexibility to know you'll back them on future decisions. Instead of confronting or contradicting the boss, you've found a way to get them to do exactly what you wanted them to do in the first place. By "adapting to the heavens" you find a way to work within the machinery of the world/business/environment in which you're involved. In this type of situation, everyone can win. You get the raise, and your boss gets a happy productive employee. -From the start to the climax. You've got to follow through. Set your goal, then don't get distracted by other emotions. Remember this is a completely non-personal interaction. Then be willing to fulfill your obligations as well. | BY: Nina | Guodian Laozi | DDJ Concordance | Comparisons | From the DIO Forum | BY: Bao Pu | By: Joshua | | Return Home | Laozi's Dao De Jing | Your Dao De Jing | Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) | Links | Meditation | Dao (Tao) is Open Forum | Book List | Other Stuff | |
