Dao De Jing Chapter 66

As a large river flows to the sea, it becomes the ruler over the hundreds of valleys it travels through.
Because of this, the hundreds of valleys have the ability to act as though they were below.
It's just natural this ability would allow the hundred valleys to be ruled.

The influence of a wise person promotes other people to advance, while keeping their own selves in the background.
Their influence places others on a higher level, while their own words remain below.
Their influence places people on a higher level, so the people don't feel like they're in the background.
Their influence promotes other people to advance, so the people won't feel like they're being criticized.
Everywhere in the world happiness abounds, yet won't prevent room for more.

Because there's nothing to argue about, that's why nothing in the world has the ability to argue with each other.

Commentary:

66 ~ A ruler doesn't rule

-As a large river flows to the sea, it becomes the ruler over the hundreds of valleys it travels through.
-Because of this, the hundreds of valleys have the ability to act as though they were below.
-It's just natural this ability would allow the hundred valleys to be ruled.

There are large rivers and there are empty valleys. That's one way Nature is able to evolve unhindered. A large river is of very little use unless there are empty valleys that allow it to travel throughout the countryside. It may seem like the valleys are ruled by the river, but each of them is simply fulfilling their own Natural integration in the world.

-The influence of a wise person promotes other people to advance, while keeping their own selves in the background.

Just as the river doesn't have a need to rule the valleys, neither do people need to rule one another. A wise person realizes this and encourages other to find their own methods for advancement in their lives.

-Their influence places others on a higher level, while their own words remain below.
-Their influence places people on a higher level, so the people don't feel like they're in the background.
-Their influence promotes other people to advance, so the people won't feel like they're being criticized.
-Everywhere in the world happiness abounds, yet won't prevent room for more.

We might be tempted to preach to others, telling them what would be the most beneficial things for them to do in their lives, but that's the time to remain like the valleys. When others are made to feel as though they have the ability to forge their own way through life, they can feel as though they're not just a cog in someone else's wheel. If you can look inside another person and see what brings them the most fulfillment and happiness, then encourage them to follow their own heart, they won't be engaged in a constant battle with your criticism. At that point, everyone in the world would feel so comfortable in being just who they are that there would be no need for contention. Happiness would not merely reach some sort of complacency, but would be constantly enriched and heightened.

-Because there's nothing to argue about, that's why nothing in the world has the ability to argue with each other.

No one would feel the need to fight to assert themselves simply because all viewpoints would be given the same credibility. There's a time to be the great flowing river, and a time to be the empty valley. If we can easily switch from one to the other, then people might just as easily find their own way to do the same thing. What would there to be to argue about - who is the ruler?
