Dao De Jing Chapter 49

A wise person is constantly without pre-conceived notions.
In that way she's able to allow the hearts of others to penetrate her own heart.
She sees those who are good as being good.
She sees those who are bad also as being good.
Her De is imbued in goodness.
She sees those who are sincere as being sincere.
She sees those who are insincere also as being sincere.
Her De is imbued in sincerity.

A wise person is affected by the whole world,
Breathing in deeply the actions of the whole world into every recess of her heart.
All the common people concentrate with their ears and eyes.
Then the wise person connects intimately with all of them.

Commentary:
49 ~ Intimate Connections

-A wise person is constantly without pre-conceived notions.
-In that way she's able to allow the hearts of others to penetrate her own heart.

Someone who hasn't already set up boundaries for themselves by making judgments on others would have the ability to connect on an intimate level with anyone.

-She sees those who are good as being good.
-She sees those who are bad also as being good.
-Her De is imbued in goodness.
-She sees those who are sincere as being sincere.
-She sees those who are insincere also as being sincere.
-Her De is imbued in sincerity.

Someone like that would see goodness and sincerity all around her. Rather than looking for ways to condemn others or look down on them, she simply figures they’re being as good and sincere as she is. If another person is bad or insincere, that doesn't really affect how she relates to them.

-A wise person is affected by the whole world,
-Breathing in deeply the actions of the whole world into every recess of her heart.

Many people might just want to turn their backs on those people they don't like or understand. Sometimes they go so far as to numb themselves to what others are doing, becoming remote and distanced from the rest of humanity. Someone who accepts the fact that she's affected by the actions of others wouldn’t need to do that. Instead of trying to change the world or remove herself from it, she allows the whole world into her heart.

-All the common people concentrate with their ears and eyes.
-Then the wise person connects intimately with all of them.

The rest of the people just make judgments based on their senses - what they see and hear. They haven't learned to feel from their hearts. A wise person lets every one of the living creatures in the world into her heart for what they are, not for what she expects them to be. In that way she can make the most intimate connection possible - a connection that allows her to share intimacy with them, not merely share what's superficially on the surface.

Alternate translation:

Someone who’s seen the blunders they made in their own life wouldn’t make judgments about others.
She’d willingly open herself up to what others might be feeling.

She’d accept the goodness coming from others
She’d even see the badness in others as being a good thing.
She’s just filled with feelings of goodness towards everyone.
If people are telling the truth, she accepts what they’re saying is the truth for them.
If people are lying, she accepts that’s the best they can do.
She doesn’t feel the need to question them.

Everything that happens has an affect on her.
She doesn’t reject any of the feelings of those she meets.
Most people’s feelings might seem pretty shallow.
But a person who’s filled with love for everyone wouldn’t hold that against them.
