Dao sprouted as one. One sprouted into two. Two sprouted into three. Three sprouted into all the living things in the universe. All living things suffer through darkness and embrace the light. In the middle, life's energy finds a way to act from the harmony of both. A person's stance might be to really hate being "alone, isolated and One Without Grain". Yet the nobility choose to call themselves by that title. A living thing may be damaged by increase; or may profit by decrease. Therefore, if a person realizes that their attitude can teach others, In the evening they will consider and discuss things, teaching each other. Therefore those who are aggressive and violent will die incomplete. I'll take these lessons as though they came from my father. ![]() ![]() Commentary: 42 ~ Helping Each Other -Dao sprouted as one. -One sprouted into two. -Two sprouted into three. -Three sprouted into all the living things in the universe. Everything on this earth came from the same source. We can look at Dao as the one uniting force or energy that preceded everything. As time progressed, cells came into being. Those cells divided into two dissimilar entities, thus allowing for insemination and the production of new beings. Although the outward appearance and nature of each thing may be different, they all share a common bond. -All living things suffer through darkness and embrace the light. -In the middle, life's energy finds a way to act from the harmony of both. There are times of suffering, when everything seems to be going against us. There are also times of extreme joy, when we seem to be floating on a cloud above all worry or problems. Every living thing experiences these changes. However, there's a force of energy that maintains harmony between the two extremes. Just as the darkest night will eventually change into a new sun-filled morning, a bright day will eventually become dark. Life couldn't exist without dark and light, summer and winter, storm and sunshine. -A person's stance might be to really hate being "alone, isolated and One Without Grain". -Yet the nobility choose to call themselves by that title. Most people don’t like to think they’re all alone, isolated and aren’t worthy enough to get anything from anyone else. People in positions of power claim to be that way - maybe in an effort to make those under their control more sympathetic to them so they’ll do what they’re told. They might hold out a reward that each person could receive - the reward of being accepted by the group and not having to feel so alone. -A living thing may be damaged by increase; or may profit by decrease. It’s easy to think that if we get more of something we like, that would be great! But we don’t want to get more of what we don’t like. Even getting too much of what we like can cause problems. Sometimes it’s wonderful to be alone, and sometimes it’s wonderful to be around other people. Too much of either can be damaging. -Therefore, if a person realizes that their attitude can teach others. -In the evening they will consider and discuss things, teaching each other. If you can feel that connection with all other living beings that The Laozi mentions in the first part of this chapter, then you’d want to share it with others. Not to try to make them feel or think the way you do, but simply to enjoy the experience of sharing and learning from them. -Therefore those who are aggressive and violent will die incomplete. -I'll take these lessons as though they came from my father. Those who spend most of their lives fighting aggressively will never feel a connection to all the other living things. They're so intent on looking for the differences and defending their own positions that they lose the concept that we all came from the same source. When they die they're still fighting. They die incomplete because they've never found love and compassion in life. The Laozi states it takes these lessons as though they came from a father. A father is supposed to represent the person who teaches you how to live a better and more fulfilled life. Alternate translation: A single cell came into being. It divided into two. Those two cells became male nd female so they could create more cells. Eventually, everything in the universe evolved into what they are now. We all dread it when bad stuff happens and get delighted when good stuff happens. But our lives still go on because of the energy we have to get through it all. Sometimes we can get distressed because we feel like we’re all alone. But then, people who are famous - the ones we admire - say they feel like they’re all alone too. So.... Getting what you think you want in life doesn’t mean you’ll be any happier, and not getting those things could make you happier. People who realize that can help others to be happier. If you get together with your friends and talk about it, you might be able to find the joy in realizing we’re all in this together. People who try to set themselves apart from others, and only look for ways to cut each other down, will always be alone. Our greatest teacher comes from the single cell that created us all. ![]() Dao Is Open Site Map | BY: Nina | Guodian Laozi | DDJ Concordance | Comparisons | Who was Laozi | | Return Home | Laozi's Dao De Jing | Your Dao De Jing | Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) | Links | Meditation | Dao (Tao) is Open Forum | Book List | Other Stuff | |
