A good traveler doesn't leave tracks or footprints. A good speaker doesn't use incorrect words in their speech. A good mathematician doesn't use tallies or chips. One who's good at building doors can construct a door that will stay closed without needing locks or bolts. One who's good at tying knots can tie a knot that will stay secure without needing additional rope. A wise person is naturally good at constantly rescuing others, but without discarding their character and without abandoning what's of true value. This is called stretching the brightness. Therefore, a good person is a good person's teacher, and an unkind person is a good person's asset. They don't value their teachers, nor do they love their assets. Although knowledge of this may seem very misleading, it's correctly called a mysterious necessity. ![]() ![]() Commentary: 27 ~ Everyone Is Good At Something -A good traveler doesn't leave tracks or footprints. -A good speaker doesn't use incorrect words in their speech. -A good mathematician doesn't use tallies or chips. -One who's good at building doors can construct a door that will stay closed without needing locks or bolts. -One who's good at tying knots can tie a knot that will stay secure without needing additional rope. Each of us has a natural ability to do some things without putting much thought into it. We seem to be able to accomplish certain tasks that others find difficult without knowing how we were able to do it with so little effort. To become really good at what we do, we all have to hone our skills. -A wise person is naturally good at constantly rescuing others, but without discarding their character and without abandoning what's of true value. -This is called stretching the brightness. Someone who recognizes how wonderful her own abilities are and how they can make her life happier would just naturally reach out to help others do the same thing. She doesn't make determinations about what parts of others need to be gotten rid of, nor does she lose sight of observing what's most beneficial to others. By remaining true to herself and simply using her natural ability to assist others on their way, she's able to share the brightness that’s inside of her. We can all help each other hone our natural talents as well. Why wouldn’t we do that? Some people think if they’re better at doing something than others they need to keep their secrets to themselves. Someone with a bit of wisdom wouldn’t do that, as they can not only benefit from teaching others but from learning from them as well. If you dont try to mold others into what you think they should be, you can learn much more from them. -Therefore, a good person is a good person's teacher, and an unkind person is a good person's asset. -She doesn't value her teachers, nor does she love her assets. Someone who has a natural inclination to help people without feeling a need to change the essence of what they are, can get benefits from anyone. She can learn from those who have qualities she admires and find value in helping those who've stumbled along the way. However, she knows not to place too much value in the teachers she admires, nor in becoming too attached to those who need her help. If you place too much importance in someone you feel is a teacher, you might lose the sense of who you are and simply try to mimic them. Every action of yours would be an effort to gain their approval. If the stakes were that high, you’d keep stumbling all over yourself and end up not learning what they could actually teach you - about yourself. If you place too much importance in the people you feel you’ve helped, your love for them might make you lose sight of who they really are. You also might want them to be constantly in need of your help, which would take them further away from being able to stand on their own. Your love for them could be an expression of your need for them to love you for what you’ve done. -Although knowledge of this may seem very misleading, it's correctly called a mysterious necessity. It can seem confusing that someone who has a natural ability to help others wouldn't constantly be on the lookout for someone who needs their help and make that some sort of mission in life. A wise person doesn't place too much value in her teachers nor become attached to those who need her help - she simply does what she does naturally from her heart. Just like the traveler mentioned above doesn't need to rely on her footprints to find out where she's going, a wise person doesn't need to rely on results in order to help others. Things are accomplished with little effort and then let go. Alternate translation: Someone who enjoys moving around a lot wouldn’t leave a trail behind them. Someone who enjoys giving speeches wouldn’t use the wrong words. Someone who enjoys solving mathematical problems wouldn’t need to use a calculator. Someone who enjoys building doors wouldn’t make one that wouldn’t stay shut. Someone who enjoys tying knots wouldn’t need to use extra rope. Someone who realizes how others find enjoyment would try to help them, but wouldn’t tell them to change anything about themsleves. That’s how people can appreciate each other. A person who’s kind would learn a lot from others who are kind, and would see those who are unkind as people who needed to be rescued. But someone who doesn’t think about being kind wouldn’t need to hold onto those they saw as teachers, nor would they fall in love with those they thought needed to be rescued. It may be tough to accept that, but it’s the only way it can work. ![]() Dao Is Open Site Map | BY: Nina | Guodian Laozi | DDJ Concordance | Comparisons | Who was Laozi | | Return Home | Laozi's Dao De Jing | Your Dao De Jing | Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) | Links | Meditation | Dao (Tao) is Open Forum | Book List | Other Stuff | |
