Dao De Jing Chapter 21

The openness of De can endure only by going along with Dao.
Dao's actions within any living thing can only be shapeless; can only be formless.
Formless! Shapeless!
In the middle there is an image of something!
Shapeless! Formless!
In its core there is a living thing!
Secluded! Obscure!
In its core there is a life force!
This life force is very real.
In its middle is the truth.

In this very moment one has the ability to overcome what has happened in the past,
Even though the memories remain,
Because one had to go through so many disciplines.

How is it possible for me to be able to understand that going through so many different disciplines was naturally correct?
Because of what’s here now.

Commentary:
21 ~ Making Decisions

There are so many decisions to make in life, how can you know if you're going in the right direction? There are decisions to be made about career choices, life partners, where you'll live, what kind of toothpaste to use. And each one of us wants to make the correct decisions, right?

-The openness of De can endure only by going along with Dao.
-Dao's actions within any living thing can only be shapeless; can only be formless.
-Formless! Shapeless!
-In the middle there is an image of something!
-Shapeless! Formless!
-In its core there is a living thing!
-Secluded! Obscure!
-In its core there is a life force!
-This life force is very real.
-In its middle is the truth.

Let’s remember that De is “the virtue of who you are” - your natural abilities that allow you to move almost effortlessly when doing certain things without knowing why. The only thing that can allow your De to flow freely is following the process of Dao. When you open your heart with sincerity, and truly open yourself to the process of Dao within you, you'll find that you can’t really pin down what’s happening. It's like an ethereal essence that just keeps moving. It's so elusive that it seems to keep appearing and disappearing. One thing for certain is that it's a vital force of life, and it's not in your imagination - it's real. Right in the middle of this life force is the truth you've been looking for. Sitting there inside of you are all the answers you've been looking for when trying to make decisions.

It's the part of you that got so covered up and distorted by the events of your life that you didn't even know it was there. It's the little seed you were born with that makes you who you are - a precious child who knew how to make decisions in an instant before he was told all the reasons why his decisions were wrong. As you get more connected with this precious gem that's you, the conditioning of the past will melt away like a snowflake on the window. And it will tell you exactly what to do, and which path to take.

-In this very moment one has the ability to overcome what has happened in the past,
-Even though the memories remain,
-Because one had to go through so many disciplines.

We can all look back on decisions we made in the past that in retrospect seem to have been totally wrong for us. What were we thinking? How could we have done those things? And how did we manage to survive after placing ourselves in some very destructive situations? There’s no need to dwell in the past or blame ourselves for what we did. That would just take us further away from seeing clearly which way we should be headed now. We learned lessons on the way, and hopefully progressed because of all the experiences we had.

-How is it possible for me to be able to understand that going through so many different disciplines was naturally correct?
-Because of what’s here now.

We had to discipline ourselves at times to have the courage to get out of bad situations and change the paths we were headed down. The thing that allowed you to eventually recognize you were headed down a wrong path was the voice within your heart screaming out to you - the voice you refused to listen to before.

Maybe you were tying to discipline yourself to stay in a situation that was bad for you because you thought you just needed to be strong enough to deal with it. That’s why so many people lead lives of quiet deperation. They can hear what their hearts are telling them, but don’t have the true strength to follow those messages.

There will always be a gem inside of you - a guiding light that will allow you to take many paths yet still remain true to yourself. All you've got to do is be willing to tear down the walls that prevent you from accepting who you are.

Alternate translation:

If you want to get right with yourself, you’ve got to stop fighting with yourself and with what’s going on around you.
The process of Dao can’t be figured out.
If you try to do that, you’ll get really lost.
There’s something inside of you.
If you try to figure it out, you’ll get really lost.
What’s there inside of you is alive.
It’s just hard to find it most of the time.
But you can feel it like a delightful energy.
That energy is real.
If you get in tune with it, you’ll find everything you need to know.
It’s easy to get bogged down with what’s happened in the past, but in each moment you can forget about it.
Well, you can’t completely forget about it.
You had to go through a lot of experiences to get where you are right now.
How can you stop thinking so much about what’s happened in the past and just accept that it all was okay?
Because of the wonderful person you are now.
Listen to your heart.
